Press Release
Annual General Meeting of the Treasury Markets Association
The Treasury Markets Association (TMA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today (Wednesday). At the meeting, Chairman of the Executive Board and Deputy Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), Mr Eddie Yue reported that the TMA achieved another fruitful year in 2009 and took a very constructive role in achieving its mission in promoting professionalism and competitiveness of Hong Kong’s treasury markets.
“During the year, the TMA contributed to the development of Hong Kong’s debt and Islamic finance markets by providing inputs to Hong Kong’s Government Bond Programme and the Government’s proposed legislative framework regarding tax treatment of Islamic financial products in Hong Kong. It has also sought to promote Hong Kong’s treasury markets and treasury markets services to the Mainland and overseas through co-operative activities with treasury-market industry organisations outside Hong Kong, and also through the organisation, support and participation in a number of regional and international events. In addition, the Association also provided professional training to its members through organising seminars, workshops and courses,” said Mr Yue.
“Looking ahead, the TMA will continue to contribute to the development of different segments of Hong Kong’s financial market. It will also review its education and qualification framework with a view to further improving standards of Hong Kong’s treasury market professionals,” added Mr Yue.
As at the end of 2009, the TMA had 74 institutional members including banks, investment banks, money brokers and major corporations, and over 1,700 individual members working in various segments of the treasury markets such as foreign exchange, fixed income instruments and derivatives.
In 2009, Chief Executive of the HKMA Mr Norman Chan has assumed the role of Honorary President of the Council. At the Executive Board meeting held immediately after the AGM, Mr Yue was re-elected as the Chairman of the Board. The latest compositions of the Council and the Executive Board of the TMA are annexed for reference.
For more information, please refer to the Association’s Annual Report for 2009, which reviews the activities and achievements of the Association during the year. The Report is available on the TMA website at www.tma.org.hk.
